Two Courtly Dances

Two contrasting dances are linked with a return of the first to create a classic ternary form. The opening dance is characterized by its driving rhythm. It features an energetic , quaver pulse and repeated, syncopated accents. A four-bar quintet (or piano) solo bridge tempers the mood and introduces the succeeding dance. This graceful, modal theme encourages the pursuit of pure tone and emulates sounds of early Baroque airs or trios.

Easy finger patterns ensure that the Two Courtly Dances may be confidently approached by players of a relatively elementary standard. Yet the piece is deceptively “catchy” and its dance rhythms appeal to a wide range of ages. Established players may be encouraged to brush the quavers off the string. The setting has four principle string lines and optional piano. The viola doubles either the first or second violins throughout.

The folio contains:
Parts for string orchestra (8-8-8-6-2)
Conductor's score
Piano accompaniment (Optional)
